Patients' top complaint with their physicians was being given an unclear or incomplete explanation of a diagnosis, according to a Consumer Reports survey of 1,000 patients.

The study asked patients to rate 16 common complaints on a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being "you are not bothered at all" and 10 being "you are bothered tremendously." Unclear explanations ranked an average of 8.1 on the scale.

Other top complaints were as follows:
•    Test results not communicated quickly — 7.9
•    Billing disputes hard to resolve — 7.8
•    Hard to get quick appointment when sick — 7.8
•    Rushed during office visit — 7.8

Researchers also found women to be more bothered than men about physicians discussing private details within earshot of other patients, inconvenient office hours and rushed office visits. Patients 65 years and older were more annoyed by extensive paperwork than those younger than 65.
