Here are six things for spine surgeons to know for Thursday, July 18, 2013.

Spine surgeons get paid less than patients think.
A startling study in the July 1 issue of Spine found that patients think orthopedic spine surgeons should be paid 10 to 20 times more than current Medicare reimbursement rates. The patients also thought that the actual Medicare reimbursement amount was seven to 10 times too low.

Minimally invasive SI joint spine surgery got new CPT code.
The American Medical Association implemented a new Category III CPT code to specifically describe sacroiliac joint arthrodesis performed with minimally invasive or percutaneous approaches, which went into effect July 1. It is Code 0334T.

Titan Spine received patent for surface design of interbody fusion implant.
Mequon, Wis.-based Titan Spine received four patents this year for technology related to its Endoskeleton interbody device and system instrumentation. The most recent patent was issued July 9 by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for aspects of the implant's roughened surface that has been shown to induce the production of proteins needed for bone growth.


Biomet's net sales jumped 6% in Q4, year-end sales up 7.6%.
Biomet's net sales increased 6 percent in the company's fourth quarter, which ended May 31, despite decreased sales for spine, large joint reconstructive and dental devices. The company's fourth quarter sales totaled $784 million, compared to nearly $740 million during the same period in 2012. Spine sales dipped from $82 million in 2012 to $67 million in 2013.

Study: patients most unhappy with unclear physician diagnoses, explanations.
Patients' top complaint with their physicians was being given an unclear or incomplete explanation of a diagnosis, according to a Consumer Reports survey of 1,000 patients.

ulrich medical released uCerv interbody spine device for US markets.
St. Louis-based ulrich medical released the uCerv Interbody System for U.S. markets. The spinal implant device is used to treat anterior cervical discectomy and fusion procedures.
