Around 43 percent of physicians surveyed for a recent JAMA report said they order more tests if they don't know the patient well.
More than half said uncertainty and worry about malpractice liability play a role in their practice. While 55 percent said practicing cost-conscious guidelines was the right thing for physicians to do, only 40 percent thought it would be effective in limiting unreasonable patient demands and 28 percent thought it could undermined patients' trust.
The study found that a greater worry about malpractice and lower comfort with uncertainty were associated with lower average cost-consciousness scores.
