Here are seven things for spine surgeons to know for Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013.

Medtronic's Q1 earnings increased but BMP sales dropped 12%.
Medtronic reported a 10 percent increase in net earnings for the first quarter of 2014, which ended July 26. Revenue from spine, including core spine and BMP, dropped to $765 million from $786 million during the first quarter of 2013. BMP alone decreased 12 percent from the same period last year.

FDA cleared CoAlign Innovations' AccuLIF interbody fusion devices to market.
Redwood City, Calif.-based CoAlign Innovations received FDA market clearance for the AccuLIF XL lateral expandable interbody fusion device line. The product line includes the AccuLIF TL for TLIF procedures and the AccuLIF PL for PLIF procedures.

Saint Louis University Hospital to invest $5M into spine program.
Saint Louis University Hospital in St. Louis plans on investing $5 million to expand its spine program to include treatments for degenerative disc disease. In the next three years, the hospital's goal is to add three more physicians to its spine program and bring the number of minimally invasive spine surgeries performed in a year up to 500.

Pediatric spine surgeon Dr. Haluk Atiok joins Loyola University Health System.
Loyal University Health System has welcomed Haluk Atiok, MD, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon with a special interest in spine surgery. Dr. Altiok is known for his work in spina bifida patients and pediatric hip dysplasia and limb deformities.

Physicians indentified major drivers of healthcare costs.
More than 13,000 physicians in The Physicians Foundation's "A Survey of America's Physicians: Practice Patterns and Perspectives," survey identified the top 10 major drivers of healthcare costs. Defensive medicine was named the biggest driver by 69.1 percent of respondents, followed by the aging population with 64.9 percent and the cost of pharmaceuticals with 59.1 percent.

Group physicians to see 3.7% salary increase, a bump 1.5% higher than hospital physicians.
Physicians of group-based practices can expect to see a 3.7 percent salary increase in 2014, while hospital-based physicians will likely see a 2.2 percent increase, according to the Hay Group's 2013 physician compensation survey. As an overall group, physicians can expect a 2.4 percent increase in salary next year.
