Most — around 67 percent — of physician practices don't plan to make any changes to their office staff in the coming year, according to the Clinical & Office Staff Salary Report from Medscape.

Only around 17 percent of respondents plan to add staff and 9 percent plan to cut staff. The remaining 7 percent said they would both add and cut positions on their staff. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects growth in clinical and nonclinical positions, according to the report, and unemployment for those in education and health services is only 5.2 percent.

The reason most physicians cited for adding staff was the anticipated higher patient volume due to the Affordable Care Act, which is expected to increase the number of Americans with insurance. Another 14 percent said the transition to ICD-10 was increasing their staff and 20 percent said they were hiring part-time or remote employees for other support services.
