Here are 10 articles on spine surgery studies and their findings within the last two weeks.

Researchers conducted a systematic review of articles involving complications after spine surgery when patients received bone morphogenic protein to examine associated complications and published their findings in Spine. The findings include a number of complication ranges as well as lower pseudarthrosis rates with the use of BMP for all procedures except PLIF/TLIF.

A new article in The Spine Journal examined the impact of spinal cord injury on members of the military. The researchers found that the severity of spinal injuries increases with increasing acceleration levels and injuries shift inferiority from the thoracolumbar junction to lower lumbar levels.

A new article published in Spine examines the eight-year outcomes for spine surgery versus non-operative care for patients with lumbar disc herniation. Researchers found that patients who underwent lumbar disc herniation surgery showed greater improvement than nonoperatively treated patients.

Researchers conducted an ambispective cohort study with cross-sectional outcome assessment to identify predictors of health-related quality of life outcomes and re-employment after thoracic fractures and published their findings in The Spine Journal. Patients with thoracic fracture but without significant neurologic injury had similar SF-36 scores to the normal population at the six-year follow up.

Researchers tested the Spine Functional Index as a whole-spine patient-reported outcome measure and reported findings in The Spine Journal. The researchers found that SFI had high criterion validity with the Functional Ratings Index, equivalent internal consistency and a single-factor structure.

A new study published in The Spine Journal confirms that using autologous bone marrow concentrate with allograft is better than using allograft alone from posterior lumbar fusion.

An article recently published in The Spine Journal examines adverse event reporting in studies for biologics use in spine surgery. According to the study, adverse event reports have resulted in safety notifications, label changes and publications covering the safety of biologics.

A study recently published in Spine examined the SECURE-C Cervical Artificial Disc from Globus Medical to determine the safety and efficacy. SECURE-C demonstrated clinically significant improvement at 24 months postoperatively in pain and function.

At the Congress of Neurological Surgeons 2013 Annual Meeting, Robert Jackson, MD, lead author of a recent study comparing cervical disc replacement outcomes and cost to spinal fusion, presented his findings. The study found that while the secondary surgery rates were lower among the disc replacement patients, the device costs were higher.

A group of researchers recently examined surgical hospitalization rates for patients with lumbar spinal stenosis from 2000 to 2009 and published their results in Spine. The researchers found that overall surgical hospitalization increased 30 percent from 2000 to 2009.
