Warsaw, Ind.-based Biomet experienced solid growth in the second quarter of 2014 with a net income of $4.9 million, up from the $66.2 million loss the company experienced during the same period last year.

Spinal fusion after 75 years old may not be worth the risks.
An article recently published in Spine examined whether the benefits of revision spinal fusions in patients older than 75 outweigh the risks, and found that revision patients had slightly worse scores for the visual analogue scale and oswestry disability index than the primary surgery patients at all intervals.

Stryker, NeuroLogica entered exclusive partnership agreement.

Few physicians can correctly estimate device costs, study finds.
Only 19 percent of physicians and residents could correctly estimate the prices of 13 common orthopedic devices, according to a new study from Health Affairs. The study found attending physicians correctly estimated the cost of the device 21 percent of the time, while residents correctly estimated the cost of the device 17 percent of the time; 36 percent of physicians and 75 percent of residents rated their knowledge of device costs as "below average" or "poor."

Global minimally invasive surgery market to reach $50.6B by 2019.
The global minimally invasive surgery market is expected to reach a market value of $50.6 billion by 2019. The market was valued at $25.03 billion in 2012 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 10.5 percent from 2013 to 2019.

High BMI may not mean more complications for cervical spinal fusion.
A new study in The Spine Journal examined obese patients who underwent anterior or posterior cervical fusions to determine whether they were associated with a higher complication rate than non-obese patients. The researchers found that BMI is not associated with increased risk of complications within 30 days of cervical spinal fusion.
