Timothy Williams, MD, an orthopedic surgeon, performed the first operation in the United States using an iPod-based navigation system at Franciscan St. Francis Health in Indianapolis, according to a USA Today report.
The system is designed to promote accuracy in surgical incisions and decisions. The iPod makes calculations to see whether the surgeon's procedure is on the right track and includes an in-depth three dimensional view of the patient's anatomy.
