Scoliosis in Older Patients: 7 Findings on Prevalence

Researchers recently published an article in Spine examining the prevalence of thoracic scoliosis in patients 50 years and older.

The research included 760 patients who received chest plain radiographs. The findings include:

 

•    24.2 percent prevalence of thoracic scoliosis
•    21.1 percent had 10 to 20 degree curves
•    2.6 percent of the patients had 20 to 30 degree curves
•    0.5 percent had 30 degree or more curves
•    Females had a higher prevalence of curves at 28.9 percent than men
•    Men had 19.4 percent prevalence of scoliosis
•    Older patients exhibited increased scoliosis
