According to a report on Healthcare Salary World, spine surgeons receive the highest pay among orthopedic subspecialists with an average of $450,000 per year. Orthopedic surgeons earn an average of $339,000 annually, and salaries in urban areas are generally higher than rural ones.

Spine on the Hill, the North American Spine Society's blog, recently updated with a post about the progress of key legislative issues, such as sustainable growth rate repeal and funding for the Independent Payment Advisory Board. Members of Congress are working on a budget deal that would not contain new funding for Affordable Care Act and reduce funding for IPAB. They are also working on SGR replacement bills.

Dr. Child focuses on complex adult deformity and degenerative disorders of the spine, spinal cord injury, cervical thoracic and lumbar microscopic spine surgery, soft tissue sarcoma and metastatic disease.

Titan Spine received five new patents from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office relating to its Endoskeleton interbody devices. The company's proprietary surface technology has shown to promote bone growth when compared to smooth titanium or PEEK.

Spinal fusion for scoliosis: factors associated with low BMI.
A study recently published in Spine seeks to determine the link between low preoperative body mass index and the outcomes of spinal fusion for patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. After conducting univariate and multivariate regression analyses, the researchers determined low BMI was significantly associated with preoperative asthma incidence and prolonged prothrombin time. Patients with low BMI were also more likely to have postoperative ileus development.
