Olympic Athlete Turned Sports Medicine Physician: Dr. Eric Heiden

Prior to becoming a physician, Eric Heiden, MD, was an Olympic speed skater and gold medalist. This year, now Dr. Heiden, he has returned to the Olympics as the team physician for the U.S. speed skating team, according to a Wall Street Journal report.  

Dr. Heiden first made a name for himself at the 1980 Lake Placid, N.Y., Winter Olympics. His five gold medals were won across all five speed skating events. He retired as a speed skater still a young man and began a career in cycling. He won a U.S. Cycling Championship and competed with the 7-11 team in the 1986 Tour de France.

 

He earned his medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1991. He completed his internship and residency at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, Calif. He underwent his fellowship training at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Ala.

 

Dr. Heiden now practices at Heiden Davidson Orthopedics in Park City, Utah.
