8 Spine & Orthopedic Device Company Financial Reports

Seven major spine and orthopedic device companies recently released quarterly financial reports.

 

ArthroCare reported a 4.9 percent jump in 2013 fourth quarter revenue to $101.7 million. The company's sports medicine line grew 6 percent over the fourth quarter of 2012, including a $1.6 million increase in product sales and $1.3 million increase in international sales.

 

Biomet reported second quarter fiscal year 2014 net income of $4.9 million, an increase over the same period last year. Biomet's net sales were up 4.5 percent in the second quarter with spine sales increased 2.3 percent to $104 million. The biggest growth was in the company's knee sales.

 

Exactech reported a 6 percent revenue increase for 2013 to $237.1 million. The company's biologic and spine revenue increased 4 percent to $25.5 million for the full year, and 3 percent in the fourth quarter. The company's total net income was $4.5 million in the fourth quarter, $15.3 million for the year.

 

Johnson & Johnson's year-end orthopedic device sales reached $9.5 million, up nearly 22 percent from 2012's sales. DePuy Synthes is a major contributor to J&J's orthopedics and spine business line.

 

Medtronic reported total revenue for the third quarter of the fiscal year 2014 at $4.1 million, up slightly from the same period last year. The company's worldwide spine revenue was down compared to the third quarter of 2013. The company's core spine business was down in the third quarter while its bone morphogenic protein revenue grew by $3 million. However, U.S. BMP revenue continues to slump at $98 million, relatively flat from the previous quarters.

 

Smith & Nephew reported 6 percent increase in fourth quarter revenue to $1.1 billion, with full year revenue up 4 percent to $4.3 billion. The company's knee implant revenue grew 5 percent in the fourth quarter, and sports medicine revenue grew 11 percent. The trauma franchise grew 5 percent.

 

Stryker's 2013 net earnings dropped 22.5 percent over the year before, reaching just more than $1 billion. However, fourth quarter revenue was up 43 percent over the same period in 2012. Spine sales accounted for $197 million in the fourth quarter, up nearly 3.7 percent. Full year spine sales were up 2.1 percent to $743 million.

 

Zimmer reported flat net earnings for the fourth quarter of 2013, reaching $761 million. However, the company's spine sales dropped 2 percent in the fourth quarter and 3 percent for the year.
