The American Medical Association's CPT Editorial Panel voted to establish a Category I CPT Code for minimally invasive sacroiliac joint fusion.
The Panel voted to establish the code for MIS SI joint fusion and deleted the current Category III CPT code to describe percutaneous/minimally invasive sacroiliac joint arthrodesis, effective Jan. 1, 2015.
Several studies over the past five years have shown the clinical effectiveness of MIS SI joint fusions and more than 10,000 of those procedures have been performed in the United States, according to a news release from SI-BONE.
"We are delighted to learn that the AMA CPT Editorial Panel has voted to establish a Category I Code for MIS SI joint fusion and we are confident that with this new code MIS SI joint fusion will become more readily available to patients who suffer from chronic SI joint pain attributable to degenerative sacroiliitis or SI joint disruptions and who can benefit from an MIS surgical treatment option," said SI-BONE President and CEO Jeffrey Dunn in the news release.
