Past President of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery Jerome M. Colter, MD, passed away earlier this month, according to an obituary written by Alexander Vaccaro, MD, and published in Spine.

Dr. Colter was director of orthopedic surgery and the orthopedic residency program at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia from 1986 to 1995. He received the American Spinal Injury Association Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003.

"Dr. Colter embodied all the attributes of a great man," wrote Dr. Vaccaro. "When I was a young orthopedic resident, I had no idea what I wanted to specialize in or where I would go following graduation. Dr. Colter's enthusiasm for complex spinal disorders, his extraordinary work ethic, his rare need for sleep and his commitment to excellence influenced my decision and the majority of the residents who graduated in by chief resident year as we all went on to careers in spine surgery."
