The International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery released a policy statement on cervical artificial disc replacement.

Domagoj Coric, MD, developed the policy statement as guidance on total disc replacement. The statement touches on the evolution of cervical disc arthroplasty and devices, including FDA approvals and IDE studies for various devices. Among the seven different prospective randomized studies in the peer review literature, the composite overall success rate favors arthroplasty over anterior cervical discectomy and fusion.

Furthermore, the range of motion studies show cervical arthroplasty maintains segmental motion at the treatment level. Additional studies have shown success with cervical disc arthroplasty at single centers, including one conducted by Dr. Coric.

"The safety and efficacy of cervical arthroplasty has been established with a growing body of Level 1 evidence that is compelling enough to no longer consider cTDR investigational," concluded the statement.
