Surgeons from Mount Sinai Medical Center, Cedars-Sinai Spine Center and the University of Toronto authored a paper in The Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine about the health state utility of patients undergoing anterior cervical discectomy and fusion or cervical disc arthroplasty.

The researchers examined patients with degenerative disc disease at a single level who either underwent ACDF or disc replacement with ProDisc-C in the investigational device exemption study. The baseline health state utility value was 0.54 in both the ACDF and CDR groups.

The researchers found HSU value changes in both groups at 24 months; CDR had an HSU value of 0.72 while ACDF had an HSU of 0.71. "Both treatments were found to have significant impact on the HSU values. These values are integral to the future of [cost-effective analysis] of ACDF and CDR," concluded the study authors.
