REmind Midline Pedicle Screws are developed by Beverly, Mass.-based SpineFrontier, a LES philosophy company.
The Less exposure surgery philosophy is to use proportionate surgical exposure for maximal effectiveness, preserving the anatomy, and lessening blood loss, surgical time and exposure to radiation, according to Kingsley R. Chin, MD, an affiliate associate professor at the Charles E. Schmidt School of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.
1. Lumbar fusions with REmind Midline Pedicle Screws requires less time in the operating room and can lead to less blood loss and a faster recovery, according to a company press release.
2. John Weaver, MD, of UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worchester recently became the first spine surgeon in Massachusetts to perform L3-S1 lumbar fusion to correct grade 2 spondylolisthesis using REmind Midline Pedicle Screws.
"The procedure was quick and efficient with significantly less blood loss verses normal fusion techniques. My patient is doing exceptionally well. She left for home the next day. Typically patients undergoing the traditional procedure would stay in the hospital longer," said Dr. Weaver.
3. In February 2014, Jeffrey Carlson, MD, of Orthopaedic and Spine Center in Newport News, Va., successfully used LES REmind pedicle screws to resolve a previous diagnosis of facet arthropathy, neural foraminal stenosis, Grade 1 spondylolisthesis and degenerative disc disease. He is the first to perform this procedure in Virginia.
4. The past decade has seen a significant improvement in pedicle screw placement ease and accuracy. However, there is room for additional enhancement. A study published in The Spine Journal in April examined the accuracy of intraoperative fluoroscopy to place pedicle screws. Researchers examined 198 consecutive patients who underwent transpedicular screw fixation, and found that 2.2 percent of the screws breached the pedicle.
5. SpineFrontier's disruptive technologies and techniques apply the LES philosophy to solve clinical problems. The company was founded in 2006, and released its first products in 2008.
