St. Cloud (Minn.) Hospital recently expanded its neuroscience/spine unit, according to a SC Times report.
1. The expanded unit is comprised of 15,500 square feet and includes 45 beds. It is a part of the St. Cloud Hospital Center for Neurosciences, which offers a wide array of services from spine rehabilitation and strengthening to surgery.
"We expanded the neuroscience/spine unit to allow for all patients from Central Minnesota to be cared for at our facility, who would otherwise need to travel a distance for similar care," said Jackie Reineke, RN, a spine and neurosurgical care specialist, to the SC Times.
2. St. Cloud Hospital is a part of St. Cloud, Minn.-based CentraCare Health, a nonprofit health system, comprised of hospitals, six nursing homes, senior housing in six communities and 17 clinics. It also offers numerous specialty services such as cancer care and heart and vascular care.
3. The expansion of the neuroscience/spine unit is part of a 223 million hospital expansion project that began in 2006, according to the report. "Before this expansion, we had patients on other units who received great care, but now we have all our nonsurgical and surgical patients together in one location," said Ms. Reineke, of the unit.
4. CentraCare Health is the region's dominant health care provider, with approximately 800 employees, more than 400 physicians and $938 million in revenue, according to the report.
5. Several hospitals have expanded their spine and neurosurgical programs recently, including University of New Mexico's Sandoval Regional Medical Center in Rio Rancho that expanded its spinal surgery options with the addition of an endoscopic spine surgery program and Fort Myers, Fla.-based Lee Memorial Health System that opened a new spine center.
