Mequon, Wis.-based Titan Spine expanded its Endoskeleton line of interbody devices to the United Kingdom and Spain.

John Sutcliffe, MD, London Spine Clinic founder, is the first in the United Kingdom to use Titan Spine's interbody fusion technology. "I am pleased to initiate use of Titan Spine's Endoskeleton TAS interbody device and its specialized surface treatment," said Dr. Sutcliffe in a news release. "It is my belief that surface technology is the next significant innovation for spinal fusions due to the ability to affect cellular response that promotes a more favorable osteogenic environment as compared to PEEK polymer implants."

Several other companies in the orthopedic and spine device marketplace are also taking their products — and even their facilities — overseas. Medtronic recently acquired Covidien and announced their headquarters would move to Ireland. In the past month, other smaller players expanding include:

•    Orchid Orthopedics broke ground on a new manufacturing site in India
•    MicroPort Orthopedics announced plans to invest $100 million in their Tennessee facility over the next five years
•    Expanding Orthopedics launched a European Design Group
•    Life Spine entered the China market

The Titan Endoskeleton interbody fusion device includes the company's proprietary implant surface technology and has a unique combination of roughened topographies at the macro, micro and cellular levels. The combination of surface textures has been shown to promote and enhance an osteogenic environment when compared to smooth titanium or PEEK.

"We look forward to continued adoption and building on this momentum to bring Endoskeleton devices to more physicians and patients throughout the European Union and beyond," said Titan Spine President Kevin Gemas in a news release. In January, the company received five new patents for the Endoskeleton interbody devices, bringing the company up to 40 patents awarded or under review.

Titan Spine has grown rapidly over the past few years; 13 of those patents occurred in 2013.
