20 Spine Surgeons & Specialists in New Leadership Positions

Here are 20 spine surgeons who received new leadership positions or appointments over the past seven months.

Beaumont Health system in Royal Oak, Mich., created the Harry N. Herkowitz, M.D., Distinguished Chair in Orthopaedics in memory of Harry Herkowitz, MD, who passed away last year. Jeffrey Fischgrund, MD, was named the first Herkowitz Distinguished Chair appointee in June 2014.

 

The Allegheny Health Network named neurosurgeon Donald Whiting, MD, neurosurgery chairman in June. He is expected to expand neurosurgery to all AHN facilities, including outpatient centers.

 

OrthoCarolina's Bruce V. Darden II, MD, was inducted as the 2014 president of the Cervical Spine Research Society.

 

Henry Ford Hospital named Steven N. Kalkanis, MD, chair of the department of neurosurgery and co-director of the Neuroscience Institute.

 

Gunnar Andersson, MD, a spine surgeon at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, was named president of the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery for 2014.

 

H. Hunter Batjer, MD, FAANS, was named president-elect of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.

 

The American Association of Neurological Surgeons named Robert Harbaugh, MD, FAANS, president.

 

Todd J. Albert, MD, who has served as president of Rothman Institute and chairman of the department of orthopedics at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, will become surgeon-in-chief at Hospital for Special Surgery on July 1.

 

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons elected Alan S. Hilibrand, MD, chair of the AAOS Communications Cabinet.

 

Raj Rao, MD, was elected to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons board of directors after serving in several other leadership positions with the organization, including the AAOS Diversity Advisory Board chair.

 

Cape Fear Valley Neuroscience Center in Fayetteville, N.C., named Charles Haworth, MD, director of neurosurgery.

 

Temple, Texas-based Scott & White Healthcare appointed of Jason H. Huang, MD, as chairman of the department of neurosurgery.

 

Praveen V. Mummaneni, MD, was elected a member-at-large of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons Executive Committee for a two-year term.

 

Charles L. Branch, MD, joined the editorial board of Spine Surgery Today.

 

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons selected William O. Shaffer, MD, as its new medical director to succeed William R. Martin, MD.

 

Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus announced the appointment of Jeffrey R. Leonard, MD, as chief of neurosurgery.

 

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia appointed Phillip B. Storm, MD, chief of the division of neurosurgery.

 

Michael Gleiber, MD, Founder of Michael A. Gleiber, MD, PA, was appointed the spine surgeon clerkship surgeon for Florida Atlantic University College of Medicine.

 

Merle P. Stringer, MD, a neurosurgeon at Brain and Spine Center, was reappointed to the Board of Medicine in Florida.

 

Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., appointed Oran Aaronson, MD, as medical director of Vanderbilt Spine Center at VUMC.
