C.D. Chivas USA

Michael Gerhardt, MD. Dr. Gerhardt is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and the head team physician of Club Deportivo Chivas USA. He also consults for the Los Angeles Galaxy and serves as a team physician for the U.S. Men's National soccer team. He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Dr. Gerhardt conducted his sports medicine fellowship at Santa Monica Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Group, where he currently practices. He has expertise in shoulder, ankle, hip and knee arthroscopy and minimally invasive techniques.

David Wallis, MD. Dr. Wallis currently practices with the South Bay Family Medical Group in Torrance, Calif. He is board-certified in sports medicine and family practice. Dr. Wallis earned his medical degree from the University of California, San Diego. He interned and completed his residency in Santa Monica. He conducted his fellowship at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance. Dr. Wallis serves as a team physician for C.D. Chivas and the U.S. Women's National soccer team.

Chicago Fire


Gilberto Munoz, MD
.  Dr. Munoz is board-certified in family medicine and practices at Chicago Sports MD. He specializes in sports medicine. Dr. Munoz earned his medical degree from the Universidad Veracruzana in Veracruz, Mexico. He completed his residency at Cook County Hospital and conducted his fellowship at Rush University Medical Center, both in Chicago. Dr. Munoz is the team medical director of the Chicago Fire. He also serves as a physician advisor for Blue Cross Blue Shield and as the medical director of General Motors.

Jason Koh, MD. Dr. Koh, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, serves as the Chicago Fire team orthopedic physician. He earned his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. He interned at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and completed his residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. Dr. Koh conducted his fellowship in sports medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Koh practices with the NorthShore University Health System. He specializes in sports medicine, hip arthroscopy and shoulder and knee injuries. Dr. Koh also currently serves as an orthopedic consultant for the Chicago Cubs.

Pete Edwards, MD. Dr. Edwards is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and specializes in sports medicine. He earned his medical degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health in Columbus. He conducted his residency at West Virginia University Medical School in Morgantown. Dr Edwards completed an orthopedic sports medicine and arthroscopy fellowship at the University of Oklahoma. He also holds a foot and ankle fellowship from Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. Dr. Edwards practices at Ohio Riverside Sports Medicine in Columbus. Scott Van Steyn, MD
. Dr. Van Steyn, a board certified-orthopedic surgeon, is currently the chief of surgery at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He earned his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, N.C., and completed his residency at Ohio State University Hospitals in Columbus. Dr. Van Steyn holds a sports medicine fellowship from the Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Ga. He belongs to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Ohio Orthopaedic Society and Midwest Orthopaedic Society.

Colorado Rapids

Wayne Gersoff, MD
. Dr. Gersoff is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and has been a Colorado Rapids team physician for more than 16 seasons. He has also served as a team physician for the University of Colorado, Colorado Rockies, Colorado Foxes, Colorado Comets, Colorado Rangers, Denver Dynamite, Denver Grizzlies and the U.S. Ski Jumping team. Dr. Gersoff earned his medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine. He interned and completed his residency at Yale New Haven (Conn.) Hospital. He conducted his orthopedic sports medicine fellowship at the University of Wisconsin Clinical Sciences Center in Madison. Dr. Gersoff specializes in cartilage restoration surgery, shoulder arthroscopy and reconstructive knee surgery. Metro Orthopedics & Sports Therapy. Metro Orthopedics & Sports Therapy in Silver Spring, Md., serves as the official team physician and sports medicine provider for the D.C. United. James Gilbert, MD, Philip Omohundro, MD, Joseph Shrout, MD, Victor Ibrahim, MD, and John Ferrell, MD, are the five board-certified physicians of MOST.

Dr. Gilbert earned his medical degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He completed his residency and internship at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. Dr. Gilbert conducted his sports medicine fellowship at Baylor University & Tom Landry Sports Center in Dallas.

Dr. Omohundro earned his medical degree and orthopedic residency from Howard University College of Medicine. He conducted his fellowship at Cincinnati Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center.

Dr. Shrout earned his medical degree from Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md. He completed his internship and residency at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Wash. Dr. Shrout completed his fellowship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Ibrahim received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in Cleveland. He interned at Maimonides Medical Center and completed his residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Dr. Ferrell received his medical degree from the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine and interned at Milton S. Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center. He finished his residency at Franklin Square Hospital Family Medicine in Baltimore. Dr. Farrell conducted his fellowship at Fairfax (Va.) Family Practice Sports Medicine.

FC Dallas

James C. Walter II, MD. Dr. Walter, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, is the head team physician of FC Dallas. He earned his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He conducted his orthopedic residency at the University of Texas Southwestern School of Medicine in Dallas and completed his sports medicine fellowship at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Ala. Dr. Walter specializes in arthroscopy, reconstructive surgery and elbow and shoulder injuries. He currently practices with Texas Orthopedic Associates, based in Dallas. Dr. Walter is an orthopedic consultant for the University of Texas at Dallas and a number of local high schools. He also serves as an assistant clinical professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Dr. Walter belongs to the Arthroscopy Association of North America, American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine, Texas Society of Sports Medicine and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Houston Dynamo

Kaare Kolstad, MD. Dr. Kolstad, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, is the head team physician for the Houston Dynamo. He earned his medical degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Farmington and completed his internship at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. Dr. Kolstad completed his residency at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia and conducted his orthopedic sports medicine fellowship at Lenox Hill Hospital, Nicholas Institute of Sports Medicine and Trauma in New York. He currently practices with The Methodist Hospital Physician Organization and holds a position as a clinical assistant professor at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Kolstad also serves a team physician for the Houston Ballet and several local area school districts. He belongs to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American College of Sports Medicine.

Los Angeles Galaxy

Bert Mandelbaum, MD. Dr. Mandelbaum currently practices with Santa Monica Orthopaedic and Sports Group in California. He leads the practice in providing physician care to the Los Angeles Galaxy. Dr. Mandelbaum, board-certified in sports medicine and orthopedic surgery, earned his medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis and completed his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He conducted his fellowship at the orthopedic surgery sports medicine division of UCLA in Los Angeles. Dr. Mandelbaum has served as the chief of orthopedic surgery at St. John's Health Center in Los Angeles and he is currently the medical director for the US World Cup team.

Byron Patterson, MD. Dr. Patterson is a team physician for the Los Angeles Galaxy. He earned his medical degree from UC Davis School of Medicine in Sacramento, Calif., and completed his residency and his fellowship at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. He founded and currently practices at Primary Care Sports Medicine in Encino, Calif. Prior to founding his own practice, Dr. Patterson was a part of the Santa Monica Orthopaedic and Sports Group, which still provides sports medicine services to the Los Angeles Galaxy. Dr. Patterson also specializes in pediatric sports medicine.

Montreal Impact

Scott Delaney, MD. Dr. Delaney is the team physician for the Montreal Impact, Montreal Alouettes, Cirque du Soleil, Montreal Express lacrosse team and McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He is currently the research director of the McGill University Health Centre Adult Emergency Department.

New England Revolution

Scott Martin, MD. Dr. Martin is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon. He earned his medical degree and interned at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He completed his residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery and Cornell University Medical Center, both in New York. He conducted two fellowships, one at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Ala., and the other at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Dr. Martin is currently the head team physician for the New England Revolution, Bridgewater State College, Wheelock College and Wellesley College. He also serves as a consultant for the National Hockey League, the World Hockey League and the Toronto Blue Jays. Dr. Martin specializes in total joint replacement surgery and arthroscopic surgery. He is currently an associate professor in the orthopedic surgery department of Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Luke Oh, MD.  Dr. Oh serves as the head orthopedist for the New England Revolution. He is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and currently practices in the orthopedics department of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Dr. Oh earned his medical degree from the Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C., and conducted his residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. He has completed two fellowships, one at Massachusetts General Hospital and the other at the Mayo Clinic Foundation. Dr. Oh has expertise in elbow arthroscopy, ACL and meniscus surgery, joint replacement surgery and shoulder and elbow injuries.

New York Red Bulls

Riley Joseph Williams, MD. Dr. Williams, board-certified in sports medicine and orthopedic surgery, is the head team physician for the New York Red Bulls and the medical director of the Brooklyn Nets. He earned his medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine and interned at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, Calif. He completed his residency and his sports medicine and shoulder service fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. Dr. Williams currently serves as the director of the Institute for Cartilage Repair and an associate attending orthopedic surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery. He also serves as an associate professor at Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Williams has expertise in knee, elbow and shoulder injuries. He belongs to the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.

Philadelphia Union


Charles Hummer, MD
. Dr. Hummer is a Philadelphia Union team physician. Dr. Hummer, board-certified in sports medicine and orthopedic surgery, specializes in joint replacement and reconstructive surgery. He earned his medical degree from the Jefferson Medical College and completed his residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, both in Philadelphia. He conducted his orthopedic sports medicine fellowship at The Christ Hospital, University of Cincinnati. Dr. Hummer also serves as a clinical assistant professor in the department of orthopedic surgery at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a member of the Philadelphia Orthopaedic Society. Dr. Hummer practices with Premier Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine.  

Steven Collina, MD. Dr. Collina earned his medical degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa. He completed his residency and his sports medicine fellowship at Shadyside Hospital at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Collina is board certified in sports medicine and currently practices at Healthplex Sports Medicine in Springfield, Pa. He belongs to the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Academy of Sports Medicine. He serves as a team physician of the Philadelphia Union and a local high school.

Portland Timbers

Jonathan E. Greenleaf, MD.  Dr. Greenleaf, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, is one of the primary physicians of Sports Medicine Oregon to provide care for the Portland Timbers. He has expertise in arthroscopic shoulder and knee surgery. Dr. Greenleaf attended the Boston University School of Medicine where he earned his medical degree and completed his residency. He interned at Eastern Virginia Medical Center in Norfolk. He conducted his sports medicine fellowship at the Orthopaedic and Fracture Clinic in Eugene, Ore., and completed an additional fellowship in pediatric orthopedics in Auckland, New Zealand. Dr. Greenleaf currently provides orthopedic services to Nike and local high schools.

Richard H. Edelson, MD
.  Dr. Edelson, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, is one of the primary physicians of Sports Medicine Oregon to provide care for the Portland Timbers. He earned his medical degree from Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland. He interned and completed his residency at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City. He conducted his sports medicine fellowship at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Dr. Edelson specializes in arthroscopic shoulder and knee surgery. He provides sports medicine services for local high schools and Nike.

Kevin J. Murphy, MD. Dr. Murphy, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, is one of the primary physicians of Sports Medicine Oregon to provide care for the Portland Timbers. Dr. Murphy received his medical degree from the University of Southern California School of Medicine in Los Angeles. He interned and conducted his residency at University of California, Irvine. Dr. Murphy completed his sports medicine fellowship at Stanford University. Dr. Murphy specializes is orthopedic trauma, reconstructive joint surgery and arthroscopy. He provides orthopedic support at the Nike Sports Medicine Clinic and local high schools.

Real Salt Lake

Andrew Cooper, MD. Dr. Cooper is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and the head team physician of the Real Salt Lake. He earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Dr. Cooper interned and completed his residency at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. He completed his sports medicine fellowship at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Denver. Dr. Cooper currently practices at Comprehensive Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Salt Lake City, of which he is a founding partner. He specializes in ankle, knee and shoulder injuries, as well as minimally invasive techniques. Dr. Cooper has consulted for the Colorado Rockies and the Denver Rockies. He also serves as the head team physician for Westminster College and Ballet West and the U.S. Freeski team.

Joseph Albano, MD. Dr. Albano, board-certified in sports medicine and family practice, specializes in musculoskeletal ultrasound, non-surgical treatment alternatives, tendinoses, osteoarthritis and rotator cuff tears. He earned his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, N.Y., and interned at Wright State University Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. Dr. Albano completed his sports medicine fellowship at Michigan State University in Lansing. He currently serves as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force Reserve and as a team physician for the Real Salt Lake, Westminster College, U.S. Military Cycling and U.S. Speed Skating.

Sporting Kansas City

Scott Luallin, MD. Dr. Luallin has been the head team physician for the Sporting Kansas City since the team's establishment in 1996. He is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and currently practices at Carondelet Orthopaedic Surgeons in Overland Park, Kan. Dr. Luallin has expertise in sports medicine and arthroscopy. He completed his medical degree and residency at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City. He conducted his sports medicine fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

San Jose Earthquakes

Michael Oberlander, MD. Dr. Oberlander, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, earned his medical degree from the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine, the Chicago Medical School. He interned at the Michael Reese Medical Center in Chicago. He completed his residency at the Boston University Medical Center and conducted his fellowship at the Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Ga. Dr. Oberlander is the founder of East Bay Sports Medicine in California. He is on the editorial boards of The American Journal of Sports Medicine and American Journal of Orthopedics. Dr. Oberlander belongs to the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and Arthroscopy Association of North America. He specializes in knee and shoulder disorders. Dr. Oberlander has previously served as the head team physician for the XFL San Francisco Demons and the former San Francisco Dragons. He currently serves as the head team physician of the San Jose Earthquakes and as an assistant team physician for the USA National Rugby Team.

Seattle Sounders FC

Michael Morris, MD
. Dr. Morris, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, earned his medical degree from the University of California, Irvine College of Medicine and completed his internship at the Lost Angeles County/USC Medical Center. He conducted his residency at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle. He completed his orthopedic sports medicine fellowship at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in California. Dr. Morris specializes in sports medicine, orthopedic surgery, shoulder and knee reconstruction and minimally invasive surgery. He is the section head of the Virginia Mason Sports Medicine Department in Seattle and a Seattle Sounders FC team physician.

Toronto FC

Ira Smith, MD. Dr. Smith is the medical director of the Toronto FC. He has previously consulted with the Canadian women's national basketball team, Skate Canada and the Toronto Raptors. He earned his medical degree and sports medicine fellowship from the University of Toronto in Canada.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC

Jim Bovard, MD. Dr. Bovard earned his medical degree from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. He has previously served as the team physician for the Canadian Alpine Ski team and a sports medicine consultant for the National Hockey League Players Association, Canadian Snowboard team and Canadian Sailing team. In the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Vancouver, Dr. Bovard served as the figure skating venue medical officer. He is the head of the sports medicine division at Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver and a member of the Canadian Academy of Sports Medicine.
