A new study published in The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery found that the number of authors on an original research article has increased significantly over the past 60 years.
In 1949, the average authors per article were 1.6; in 2009 the average authors per article was 5.1. The study authors also noted more internationalization of the two journals studied — the American and British volumes of The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery — and increased contribution from authors in Europe and the Far East.
The research also found 30 percent of authors in 2009 had an advanced research degree.
