The North American Spine Society has announced the winners of the 2012 Research Traveling Fellowship and Research Grant Awards.
NASS provides funding for research traveling fellowships that span at least five months at one medical center other than their current facility. This year, a total of $217.740 was awarded.
The Research Traveling Fellowship was awarded to Fabrizio Russo, MD, and Giuseppe Esposito, PhD, of Rome. Research grant award winners are:
• Mauro Alini, PhD, of Switzerland for "Stem Cell Based Intervertebral Disc regeneration-Evaluation in Organ Culture"
• K. Arne Mehrkens, MD, of Canada for "Mechanistic Determination of Notochordal Cell-Induced Anti-Apoptotic Signaling in Human Nucleus Pulposus Cells"
• Jeffrey C. Lotz, PhD, of San Francisco for "Does Diabetes Cause Intervertebral Disc Degeneration?"
• Thomas D. Cha, MD, of Boston for "A Prospective Clinical Audit Measuring the Impact of Shared Decision-Making Aids on Cost Variation for Diagnosis and Treatment of Degenerative Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Within a Pioneer Accountable Care Organization Model"
