Eminent Spine is a growing privately held company focusing on the development of biomechanically sound devices for the spine.
1. The company announced it has received a patent for its DiamondBack Pedicle Screw Fixation System from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The MIS pedicle screw is 35 to 55 mm in length and includes capped towers preventing splaying and easy tab break-off.
Several spine device companies have recently received patents, including TransCorp Spine that was issued a patent for a locking plate used in anterior cervical fusion procedures.
2. Based in Georgetown, Texas, Eminent Spine was founded by David Freehill and Stephen P. Courtney, MD, who also founded the spine division at Plano Orthopedic Sports Medicine and Spine Center.
3. The company's products include an ALIF cage, buttress plate, cervical plate, PLIF cage and MIS Screw. Its products are all named after different types of snakes because the snake is all spine, and that is what the company focuses on.
4. Eminent Spine announced earlier this month that it has passed two consecutive inspections conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The FDA conducted two inspections at the Eminent Spine facility in the last three years. The company received a closeout letter from the FDA stating that a warning letter the company had received in 2010 was rescinded.
5. The U.S. spinal surgery market revenues are expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 4.8 percent from 2013 to 2017. This represents a slow down from the past few years, where the market registered a CAGR of 5.8 percent from 2007 to 2012.
The spinal fusion market growth is expected to slow as well, with GlobalData reducing its projected CAGR from 10 percent to 5 percent through 2020.
